Tournaments

There are three primary differences between poker tournaments and ring games. First, a poker tournament has a defined beginning and end. All tournament players begin the game with an equal number of chips and typically play poker until one player is left standing, winning all of the chips. This is different from a ring game, in which a player joins a Texas Hold’em or Omaha Poker table with ongoing poker action. These players can come and go and the game has no defined end, short of the table closing.

Second, the chips used in poker tournaments have no inherent value—they exist only while the tournament is in play and cannot be cashed out or used to play in another game.

Finally, the blinds at a ring game stay the same. In a tournament, however, the blinds and antes are raised at regular intervals, making the pots larger and the play more intense by forcing players to get involved in the game before they run out of chips.

There are two main types of tournaments:

 Sit & Go Tournaments

Sit & Go Tournaments start as soon as all of the seats are occupied. You can generally find one to play shortly after you log on to Everest Poker. In general, Sit & Go Tournaments are restricted to a relatively small number of players, so the action tends to be fast-paced and you need not set aside a lot of time to participate.

Scheduled Tournaments

Scheduled Tournaments start at a particular date and time. These tournaments are announced well in advance and players must register in order to participate. Scheduled tournaments may have thousands of players and often have huge prize pools.
