Poker Rules

Many poker games share similar rules. Players are asked to create the best hand possible from a mix of cards in their hands, often called pocket cards, and the community cards on the table.

At Everest Poker, we offer the most popular poker games in this category: Texas Hold’em and Omaha Poker. You can read more about these games at our Texas Hold’em rules page and our Omaha poker rules page.

But there are also unwritten poker rules, called “poker etiquette,” that come into play during casual poker games, online poker tournaments, and even live poker events such as the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.

Knowing these unspoken poker rules will make you a better player, and will make you into the kind of person that other poker players will welcome back to the table more often.

1. Never reveal your cards in the chat window during a hand. Doing this can give other players an unfair advantage or ruin the pot. Some online poker rooms and casinos will even penalize you for discussing your cards during a hand.

2. Keep your mouth shut as often as you can. Criticizing other players with the chat feature isn’t technically against any of the official poker rules, but it might lead to you not getting invited back for the next tournament. Don’t talk about hands you are not playing, either. Doing so can also get you penalized because many online poker rooms consider it a form of collusion.

3. Don’t complain in the chat window about hands after you have folded for the round. Keep things quiet and simple: Don’t talk about the pot, hands, or the community cards at all. This behavior can also give other players an unfair advantage.
